Anti Racism Policy
WOOLACOMBE SCHOOL POLICY FOR RACE EQUALITY
AIMSTo educate our pupils, staff, governors and parents to eradicate racism
To ensure that all children regardless of their race, or culture or ethnicity learn effectively
To promote and value diversity
To help eradicate any form of harassment and promote equal opportunities
To ensure all our community know that due to our geographical location it is as important to teach tolerance and understanding and anti-racism.
To ensure that on all appointments to our staff we have race equality
This policy is linked to our Policy on Equal Opportunities, Behaviour and Discipline Policy, Special Needs Policy and Policy on Learning.
We recognise that it is a human right not to suffer racism of any kind
?« We will work to celebrate the diversity and positive contribution all people and communities make to our school and wider community.
?« We will ensure that racial equality is an integral part of the ethos of our school
?« We will build racial equality objectives into our curriculum and programmes of study.
History programme of study will be Benin, which will address slavery and racism
Africa will be a geographical area of study
Famous people will include all those who have either suffered or helped to eradicate racism; Martin Luther King, Ann Frank, Harriet Tubman, William Wilberforce, Nelson Mandela, Oloudah Equiano etc.
RE will promote the raising of awareness of ethnic minorities and those of other religions
PSHE will look at educating and changing attitudes towards others
Geography units of study will include Africa and China and Human rights will be addressed through Literacy and PSHE. Famous people will include Confucius, Gladys Alyward etc.
?« We will not only raise awareness of different cultures but also challenge prejudices and stereotyping across our school and community.
?« We will actively plan to address all racial issues and educate our pupils, and wider community within individual lessons
?« We will monitor the levels of attainment and emotional and social development of ethnic minority pupils and address under-achievement
?« We will have a discipline and behaviour policy that will incorporate anti-racism
?« We will ensure that on all recruitments, and the selection and interview processes we will have an open mind and promote equality of opportunity
?« We will monitor, record and review all racist incidents however small
?« To report any incident to be recorded by the school administration staff and then notified to the LEA.
?« To review our procedures and analyse and plan for outcome. This may be as either a whole staff, governing body or as a part of planning PSHE and teaching and learning.
?« We will have an open admission and attendance policy
?« We will build upon our partnerships with parents and the wider community to disseminate racial equality good practice and tackle racial discrimination
?« We will seek to resolve all conflicts by negotiation and or using the support of other agencies
?« Children who arrive in school with English as a Second Language (ESL), we will refer to the advisory service and seek help and support. We will also ensure that we use resources in that language whenever possible (School Library Service)
?« Our festivals and celebrations will take account of those of other faiths
?« We will ensure that all our new and prospective parents will know our policy by incorporating our philosophy into our school Prospectus/Handbook
?« We will ensure that race equality is in the forefront of our minds in any staff recruitment
?« We subscribe and will meet the standards in ?Learning for All?.
As a whole school we will monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of our Race Equality Policy every year.
We will induct new staff and governors by ensuring that this policy is a part of their new pack
This policy will be kept in our School Policy File and Staff Handbook situated in the Head Teacher?s study.
Our school has won an award in the past for its work on anti-racism
